Six industries, six different failure modes. The bearing choice is driven by contamination, misalignment, temperature and load — not by catalogue page order.
Metallurgy & rolling
Spherical rollers (222/223/230/231/232 with W33 groove) absorb stand deflection and chock misalignment and are the default for back-up rolls; four-row or double-row cylindrical rollers (NU/NJ) carry the radial load with a separable inner ring for fast roll changes; tapered rollers (302/303/322/323) take the axial location. Hot positions specify C3/C4 clearance with machined brass cages and high-temperature grease or oil-air lubrication.

Spherical rollers (222/223/230, tapered bore +K with adapter sleeve) tolerate shaft deflection and mounting error; reinforced cages and the W33 groove suit impact. Tapered rollers (302/303/322/323) take the axial component, spherical plain bearings GE…ES cover cylinder eyes and rocker arms, and slewing rings serve excavator and stacker platforms. Prefer contact or labyrinth seals and tie the node into centralised lubrication to extend the change interval.

Insert units on cast housings (UCP/UCF/UCFL/UCT) and the SA200 series are self-aligning, taking up shaft deflection and welded-frame distortion; an eccentric collar or set screws let an operator swap the unit with one spanner. Double-lip 2RS seals keep mud and water out, and factory grease fill is sized for a season. Hubs and drives use tapered rollers (302/303); conveyors and cleaning use 62xx-2RS.

Paired angular contacts (70xx/72xx, DB back-to-back or DF face-to-face) give precise preload and two-way axial location, the standard for centrifugal pumps and screw compressors. Cylindrical rollers (NU/NJ) carry the radial load alone so the angular pair handles only thrust; vertical shafts and submersibles use thrust balls (51100/51200). Hot services take C3 clearance and high-temperature grease; corrosive media can be matched with stainless or coated executions.

Fans and motors rely on spherical rollers (213/222/223), which soak up shaft deflection and centring error; hot positions get C3/C4 clearance and brass cages so thermal growth cannot seize the bearing. On the motor side shaft current must be considered — electrically insulated or hybrid ceramic options are quoted on request. Dusty coal handling prefers contact seals with centralised lubrication.

Start with sealed 2RS deep groove ball bearings (62xx-2RS, 63xx-2RS) and H1 food-grade grease: no water ingress, no corrosion. Housed positions use stainless SA200 or coated housings so the seat and fasteners do not rust. Conveyors and packaging suit engineered-plastic units (POM/PP), light and washdown-proof; linear guides (LM/LME) need a cover to keep flour and sugar dust off the raceways.
