Metallurgy & rolling
Spherical rollers (222/223/230/231/232 with W33 groove) absorb stand deflection and chock misalignment and are the default for back-up rolls; four-row or double-row cylindrical rollers (NU/NJ) carry the radial load with a separable inner ring for fast roll changes; tapered rollers (302/303/322/323) take the axial location. Hot positions specify C3/C4 clearance with machined brass cages and high-temperature grease or oil-air lubrication.
Typical applications
Typical conditions: Roll stands live in a hard thermal regime: radiant heat from the hot strip and heat conducted through the chocks keep the housing warm, grease cokes and thermal growth eats into the operating clearance. Each bite of the rolls brings a shock load, while scale and cooling water keep attacking the seals. The line runs continuously, so an unplanned stop costs hours of output.
